# Cryogenic and Freezer Labels

Consolidated Printing Supplies builds custom labels for vials, tubes, bags, and boxes stored in -20°C and -80°C freezers, blast freezers, and liquid nitrogen. We match the face stock, adhesive, and print method to your storage conditions and how you apply the label, then send free samples so you can test them in your own freezer before you order.

## Why labels fail in the cold

Cold storage breaks labels in ways that are easy to miss until a sample can no longer be identified:

- **Adhesive.** Standard adhesives stiffen and lose tack as temperatures drop. Labels that looked fine at room temperature start to lift, flag, or fall off in the freezer.
- **Application.** Labeling items that are already cold or frosted is a different problem. Frost and condensation keep a normal adhesive from ever making contact with the surface.
- **Thaw cycles.** Every time a sample comes out, condensation forms on the label. Paper absorbs it, and many inks smear when they are handled wet.
- **Small diameters.** Labels on narrow vials and tubes are under constant tension. Add cold, and stiff materials pull away at the edges.

## What each storage condition demands

### -20°C and -80°C freezers

Lab and pharmaceutical freezers need an adhesive that stays bonded at the storage temperature and through repeated freeze and thaw cycles, plus print that stays readable when the label is wet with condensation.

### Liquid nitrogen

Liquid nitrogen storage reaches roughly -196°C in the liquid phase and somewhat warmer in the vapor phase. Labels need a film that stays flexible at those temperatures and an adhesive rated for cryogenic exposure. Tell us whether your samples sit in the vapor phase or are immersed in liquid, because that changes the construction.

### Blast freezers and frozen food

Blast freezers add high-velocity cold air to the low temperature, which can peel a weak label edge right off. Food packaging labels also need a freezer-grade adhesive that bonds to film, corrugated, or packaging that may already be cold. See how we solved this for a [meat packing operation](https://consolidatedprintingsupplies.com/success-stories/meat-packing-and-a-blast-freezer-labeling-disaster?hsLang=en).

## How we build cryogenic and freezer labels

- **Face stock:** polyester or polypropylene films that stay flexible in the cold and will not absorb moisture.
- **Adhesive:** cryogenic or freezer-grade adhesives selected for your storage temperature and for whether you apply the label before freezing or to already-frozen items.
- **Print:** thermal transfer resin for printing on your own printer, or pre-printed graphics, plus variable data such as barcodes and serial numbers.
- **Documentation:** UL 969 recognized and FDA-compliant material options, with documentation available on request.

## What we need to recommend a label

- Storage temperature, and for liquid nitrogen, vapor phase or immersion
- When the label is applied: at room temperature before freezing, or to cold or frozen items
- What the label goes on: vial, tube, bag, or box, its material, and its diameter
- How it is printed: your printer model, or pre-printed by us
- Other exposures: thaw cycles, alcohol wipes, autoclaving, or water baths
- Label size and approximate annual quantity

## Test it free, in your own freezer

We send free material samples so you can run them through your actual storage and handling before committing. Once a construction passes, standard production typically takes 7 to 10 business days, with rush service available. We run everything from short prototype runs to programs of 1,000,000+ labels.

## Frequently asked questions

Why do my labels fall off in the freezer?

Standard adhesives stiffen and lose tack as they get cold, so labels that held at room temperature lift or drop off in storage. A freezer-grade or cryogenic adhesive matched to your storage temperature solves most of these failures.

Can labels survive liquid nitrogen?

Yes, with the right construction. A flexible film with an adhesive rated for cryogenic temperatures and resin print is built for liquid nitrogen storage. Tell us whether samples are stored in the vapor phase or immersed in liquid, since that affects the materials.

Can I label vials or packages that are already frozen?

Yes, but it takes a different adhesive. Labels applied to cold or frosted surfaces need a freezer-grade adhesive designed to bond at low temperatures. Let us know how and when you apply labels so we can match it.

Will barcodes stay readable through thaw cycles?

Resin print on a synthetic film holds up to condensation and handling far better than paper or standard inks, so barcodes stay scannable after repeated freeze and thaw cycles.

Do you provide material documentation?

Yes. UL 969 recognized and FDA-compliant material options are available, with documentation on request.

What is the minimum order?

Typically 2 cases, depending on label type and material.
